Thai Burma Rail

Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum

Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum

Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum Hellfire Pass Looking into Hellfire Pass Hellfire Pass Memorial plaque

Hello,

I am travelling with a bunch of friends and want to know if it is possible to travel from Patong to the Thai Burma Railway pass...we are staying 12 days from the 26th September 2011...

Answer.
Yes, it is possible to travel from Patong to the Thai Burma Railway Pass also known as Hellfire Pass but it is along way from Phuket if you are only in Phuket for 12 days.

The Death Railway and Pass are located about 80 km out of Kanchanaburi about an 1 1/2 hours drive North West of Bangkok and just over 1000 km north of Phuket.

If you are traveling to Bangkok, you will find many day trips that take in Hellfire Pass and the Tiger Temple, which are both located on the same Road out of Kanchanaburi.

You will find these day trips to be long days and you need to work with the tour companies tight schedules.

Hellfire Pass is only a short walk from the Memorial Museum but the track takes you down the mountain for 4 km with a pick up point about 2.5 km into the walk. This booklet by the Australian government provides alot of information and maps about the Pass and Memorial

The Kanchanaburi area is very popular for weekend getaways for local Thai's from Bangkok, so try to plan your stay during the week.

Our suggestion would be to plan your trip and stay in Kanchanaburi for a few days and hire a local driver to show you all the sights and not be rushed by a tour company.

We were lucky enough to find one of the most informative taxi drivers in Kanchanaburi, his name is Wisut and he can be contacted on 08 9800 9225.
